HERMITAGE OF SAINT PETER GONÇALVES TELMO
Patron Saint of Fishermen

ABOUT THE HERMITAGE
The construction of the São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo Chapel is the realization of a childhood dream of Leonardo Pacheco, a native of São Paulo who emigrated to Canada 25 years ago. This family chapel, owned by Leonardo Pacheco and Walter Fisher, located in Canada do Cinzeiro, Caloura, was built from scratch, with a construction area of 51.15 m² and with space to accommodate 80 people. This temple displays fragments of the Baroque style of the 16th and 17th centuries and its façade is dominated by black and grey, which is common in Azorean churches. The chapel is full of unique details, one of the most important being the reliquary of São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, which was brought from Tui, in Spain, where the mortal remains of this saint are located. The stained glass windows that illuminate this temple also have a history, as they were gifts as a result of a promise or devotion, as do the extraordinary paintings on its ceiling.
